This is the mantra at our clinic for 2014. Our aim is to highlight probably one of the biggest health problem we have facing since smoking: it is sitting. You are probably sitting glaring into a bright coloured display reading the text on your screen. And while your mind is devouring this amazing knowledge I am about to present to you, your body is yearning for you to move. The truth is, we don’t move as much as we should. Some of us may find ourselves at a gym two to three times a week. And some of the even better ones among us, may be out there playing squash with a friend, or in a soccer league twice a week. While all these intentions are good, the truth is, the movement they provide cannot counterbalance the immense amount of sitting we do in our lives.
Sitting Too Much Is Detrimental To Your Health
It is estimated that we sit anywhere between 7 to 9 hours a day. If you factor in that we sleep for approximately 8 hours, the amount of time we are actually moving is minimal. This sedentary lifestyle is causing many of us to fall ill to conditions as significant as those caused by smoking. Conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure are rising. But the prevention is not that complicated. My proposal: if you are truly interested in leading a healthy and active lifestyle, then you must look at ways to induce activity in your work place. One of the easiest ways to accomplish this is by standing in the workplace, or even better, setting up a treadmill desk. Either way, you will burn calories, you will accomplish tasks much quicker, and because your body is doing more work, you’ll probably find yourself checking Facebook less often.
My challenge for everyone out there is to find ways to be active in the workplace. If you would like to share your idea, please do so by emailing me at email@example.com
Say no to sitting!
